A New Era of 5G Deployment

The recent announcements by Nokia highlight the company’s commitment to 5G deployment and its role in shaping the future of wireless communication. With the completion of the commercial C-RAN deployment with Elisa, Nokia has demonstrated its capabilities in providing a scalable and efficient network infrastructure for 5G.

Key Benefits of C-RAN

  • Scalability: C-RAN allows for the deployment of multiple remote radio heads (RRHs) in a single site, increasing the capacity of the network and enabling faster deployment of new services. Efficiency: C-RAN reduces the need for physical infrastructure, such as cell towers, and minimizes the environmental impact of network deployment.

The trial was designed to test the feasibility of in-line acceleration in a real-world setting.

    Introduction

The concept of C-RAN (Centralized Radio Access Network) has been gaining traction in the mobile industry, particularly in the realm of 5G networks. C-RAN is a centralized architecture that separates the radio access network from the baseband processing, allowing for greater flexibility, scalability, and efficiency. In-line acceleration, a key component of C-RAN, enables the acceleration of data processing tasks, such as video encoding and decoding, to be performed closer to the user, reducing latency and improving overall network performance.

    The Trial

In October 2023, Elisa and Nokia conducted a trial of C-RAN powered by in-line acceleration at Elisa’s headquarters in Finland. The trial utilized Nokia’s commercial 5G standalone RAN and 5G core, providing a real-world setting to test the feasibility of in-line acceleration.

C-RAN adoption paves the way for 5G networks.

    Early Adoption of C-RAN

Nokia’s 5G Cloud RAN solution has been successfully deployed in a commercial setting, marking a significant milestone in the adoption of Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN) technology.

    The Ultra-Broadband Market in Italy

Italy is a country with a rich history and culture, but it also faces significant challenges in its digital infrastructure. The ultra-broadband market in Italy has been growing rapidly in recent years, driven by increasing demand for high-speed internet and the need for businesses to stay competitive in the digital economy.

With the Shikra radios, Nokia will be able to provide 5G coverage and capacity in cities with dense populations. This is particularly beneficial for industries that require high-bandwidth applications, such as healthcare, finance, and education. These industries can take advantage of the high-speed, low-latency, and massive machine-type communications (mMTC) capabilities of the Shikra radios. For instance, hospitals can use the Shikra radios to enable remote surgeries, which require high-speed data transfer and low latency. Similarly, financial institutions can use the Shikra radios to facilitate high-speed, low-latency transactions, such as stock trading. In education, the Shikra radios can be used to provide high-speed, low-latency access to educational resources and enable remote learning. Nokia’s Shikra radios will be a key component in enabling these premium user experiences, which are being offered by the operators.
