Built to survive a bad connection
The words in the phonetic alphabet were chosen deliberately: each one is phonetically distinct from every other, easy to pronounce across different accents and languages, and long enough to survive a dropout or a burst of static without becoming ambiguous. That's why “Alpha” beats just saying “A”, and why the alphabet has barely changed since it was standardized internationally in the 1950s.
For amateur radio operators, spelling out a callsign phonetically at the start of a contact is standard practice — it gets the callsign copied correctly the first time, which matters most exactly when conditions are too weak or noisy for a second try.

What is the NATO phonetic alphabet?
A standardized set of words assigned to each letter — Alpha for A, Bravo for B, and so on through Zulu for Z — chosen so they're hard to mistake for one another even over a noisy radio link. It's formally the ICAO/NATO/ITU spelling alphabet and is used across aviation, maritime, military, and amateur radio.
How are digits spelled phonetically?
In everyday radio and aviation use, digits are mostly spoken as their normal words (Zero, One, Two...), with one common exception: 9 is pronounced "Niner" so it can't be confused with "nine" lost in noise or mistaken for the German "nein."
Why not just say the letter itself?
Many letters sound alike over a weak or noisy signal — B, D, and V, or M and N, are easy to confuse. Saying "Bravo" instead of just "B" removes almost all of that ambiguity, which matters when a single misheard letter changes a callsign or a coordinate.
Is this the same alphabet used in aviation?
Yes — the ICAO phonetic alphabet used by pilots and air traffic control is the same one adopted by amateur radio operators worldwide, which is one reason it's worth learning even outside of ham radio.
